Extraocular Muscles

The extraocular muscles – six relatively small muscles – control the movement of the eyes in the socket, allowing them to rotate or turn horizontally and vertically. As such, these muscles play a crucial role in functional, accurate eye movement.

The six extraocular muscles (eye muscles) are:

  • Medial Rectus Muscle (inner eye muscle)
  • Lateral Rectus Muscle (outer eye muscle)
  • Superior Rectus Muscle (upper eye muscle)
  • Inferior Rectus Muscle (lower eye muscle)
  • Superior Oblique Muscle
  • Inferior Oblique Muscle
